Just 90 miles north of Phoenix, after a beautiful drive along the Beeline Highway 87 through the Mazatzal Mountains, you arrive in the old mining and lumber town of Payson. The saguaros have disappeared, replaced by pine trees; the temperature decreases as your elevation increases. This is rim country. The town sits at the base of the Mogollon Rim, pronounced muggy-own and named after Spanish governor Juan Ignacio Flores Mogollon. In town, turn right at the stoplight and take AZ 260 east, with the rim looming above you to the north and the Hellsgate Wilderness spreading out below to the south.
