Atascosa Lookout Professional Review and Guide

"This well-groomed trail provides an outstanding day hike to an old fire lookout high in the southern Tumacacori Mountains near Nogales.

The hike begins in grassy foothills, bearing north as it makes a gradual ascent. Upon reaching the hilltops, a blocky butte rises ahead, and a glittering stock tank nestles among live oaks in a hollow to the east. The arid Patagonia Range dominates the eastern horizon, mounting ridge upon sunbaked ridge toward the desert sky. The high grasslands traversed by the trail make ideal hunting grounds for the American kestrel, a songbird-sized raptor that makes its living on grasshoppers and an occasional smaller bird."
