In a land of lakes and streams, a campground away from the water can be a quiet oasis. Los Burros is just a few miles north of the bustling lakes of the White Mountain Apache Reservation, but your fishing tackle can stay packed here. Instead, the campground looks out of the tall pines on a lovely grassy meadow. In 1909, the Forest Service set aside 240 acres here for a fire guard, and Los Burros was home to the ranger who rode out every day to man Lake Mountain Lookout, watching for the telltale thread of smoke that would call out brave men to fight forest fires with hand axes and shovels.
