Butterfield Stage Route Professional Review and Guide
"This section of the Butterfield Stage Route is inside the Sonoran Desert National Monument and is directly adjacent to a wilderness area. Two-wheel drive adequate most of the way when dry. A bit rougher through the Maricopa Mountains. Suitable for stock SUVs. Dangerously hot in summer. Carry plenty of water and travel with someone."

still closed as of 10/23/2010. can't wait for it to reopen.
Still closed as of April 7, 2009. Check with the Bureau of Land Management before you go to make sure it's open.
This trail looks amazing, and there are several others off of this trail, but the trails have been closed down on June 13th and will not open again unit July 13th.
I went to go sign in and there was some information on the trail being closed until July 13th, so I guess we will call the number on the paper and call and find out when the trails re-open.
The mile markers on hwy 238 drop from 24 to 19 in the space of a mile. The turn off from hwy 238 is between mile markers 17 and 19 and there are no signs marking the turn off on the road. Rather, the signs are recessed 100 feet on the dirt road to the north.
Great old stagecoach trail with flat, even surfaces and side washes for those who like to trot and lope their horses. Straight route -- cannot get lost. Nice scenery.
