Most people who make the drive from Kingman to Las Vegas don’t pay much attention to the rugged, forlorn-looking hills to the east. The Cerbat Mountains have their secrets, however, including wild horses, several ghost towns (one alive and well), and two Bureau of Land Management (BLM) campgrounds. This is the Mojave Desert, whose barren expanses make the Sonoran Desert with its trademark saguaros seem green by comparison. It seems surprising to find anything along this road, but as you switchback higher, the air cools and pinyon and juniper appear.
