In recent history, the Hualapai Mountains have been home to dozens of working gold mines. Going up any canyon cyclists are likely to find a prospecting hole, cyanide-stained tailing remnants, even complete mining operations. Most of the gold mining in the Hualapais came to a sudden end during the Great Depression; wealthy owners simply abandoned the mines and their workers before taking any greater losses than they already were. This ride leads to the ruins of two such mines: The Gold King Mine and the Merlo Mine. The Gold King Mine, and its abandoned two-story “mansion,” is now on the Arizona State Preservation Office’s register. Trail Surface: Doubletrack and dirt road.
