Woodchute Mountain Professional Review and Guide
"Small and often overlooked, the Woodchute Wilderness offers uncrowded hiking along with some spectacular vistas. Reaching the top of Woodchute Mountain, the easy Woodchute Trail provides the best access to the area."
--Scott S. Warren, 100 Classic Hikes Arizona (The Mountaineers Books).
Not sure why this trail was listed as one of the 100 Classic Hikes in Arizona since the Mingus Rim Trail is right across the highway and is MUCH better than this trail. This trail in my opinion give some great views but does not compare to the Mingus Rim Trail.
The pros of this trail were the panoramic views as well as the low traffic. The cons are that there isnt much to see up close and the trail is exposed to the sun a little more than I thought, so be sure to go on a cool day. Also the directions to the trailhead were incorrect. I could not find the Potato Patch Campground sign, instead look for the Summit Picnic Area.
This was a good hike, despite some leftovers from a recent prescribed burn, still very beautiful. Road to trailhead was well maintained. Best views are in first mile. Saw lots of deer and other tracks, was rather cold in November, got a few snowflakes. 3hrs 30minutes
Easy access combined with breathtaking views. Watch out for the horse traffic and everything that goes with that. A perfect trail when you only have a few hours to spare.
