This is an enjoyable hike through ponderosa pine and Gambel oak forest on Mingus Mountain, with some good views. The well-graded trail climbs gently north through an open stand of ponderosa pine. After about 0.5 mile the slope becomes steeper and the trail switchbacks past several large rock outcrops to reach the rim of Mingus Mountain. There are glimpses of Prescott Valley to the west and Hickey Mountain to the northwest during this ascent.
