Wow. My first time backpacking in the canyon. We took the New Hance out and only 2 out of the 8 of us made it. Everyone ran out of water and got lost several times. I had to hitch-hike to get water to bring back to the rest of the group so they could make it out, which they did eventually. Right around midnight. That being said, this was probably the most beautiful and challenging trails I have ever done, so I give it a 5.

Hiking this trail was one of the best experiences of my life; it was also one of the most physically exhausting. The scenery and the views presented along the way were amazing, and it was an awesome realization of God's masterful creation! Be prepared for the experience of a lifetime, but take plenty of water, in fact take too much water and don't pack extraneous materials. You won't need or even want much food.

WOW! What an introduction to the Grand Canyon!! We took this trail down to the river to start our 4 day backpacking trip. It encompassed amazing views, and gave a geology tour of the last ~4 billion years. It was a great trail for solitude and had some of the coolest rock formations/views I've ever seen. It also took a lot longer to reach the river than I expected (~6 hrs). You'll need a good sense of direction, and some diligence in route-finding but this was one of the best trail experiences I've ever had. Watch out for snakes, and the river will be a most welcome site when you finally reach Hance Rapids.
