In January 2001, President Bill Clinton designated the 496,337-acre Sonoran Desert National Monument. Encompassing a vast stretch of its namesake, this national monument incorporated three desert mountain ranges and the interceding basins into a single unit that typi?es the seemingly sparse yet ecologically diverse desert lands west of Phoenix. Because much of this preserve is often overlooked by hikers, few actual hiking trails enter the expansive monument. One that does is the Margies Cove Trail, which penetrates the northern third of the monument.
