As you leave the highway, signs read “primitive road, use at your own risk.” Other signs warn that no services are available; the Park Service recommends you bring extra water, food, gasoline, spare tires, and tools. The beginning of the drive is sandy, and flocks of sparrows flitter away to avoid your trailing dust plume. As the long washboard road winds on it may be rutted or peppered with rocks and tire-thumping potholes. Take your time (allow two to three hours) and enjoy the scenery as it subtly changes from scrub brush to grassy plains to junipercovered hillsides.
