A day hike on the Flagstaff Urban Trail System, with access to national forest trails. Observatory Mesa is named for Lowell Observatory, which is located on its southeast edge. The observatory was established in 1894, just a few years after the settlement of Flagstaff. An influx of astronomers and other researchers began that changed the character of the small logging town forever.
