This is a beautiful hike, but, if you are doing it in the summer (or, if the temperatures are above 85) start EARLY. You are afforded little shade after 9am. Don't think you are going to rest under a pine on top with cool breezes. Take plenty of water and be prepared for lots of scree on the way down. If you start and finish at the parking lot, this is a six mile hike.

A great challenge. Although the trail was good and not technically difficult, the strenuous part was hauling myself up to 9299 feet! I believe I hiked for 2 minutes and then rested for five minutes. I carried a relatively heavy pack as we were continuing on to make a ten mile loop. Traveling early in the morning and light would be advisable. A very busy trail.

This is a great hiking trail that swithes back and forth and keeps a steady above average rate of climb. It tops out on the top of mount elden and there is an awsome view of flagstaff to the south. I incorporated the catwalk trail that goes along the saddle between mount elden and little mount elden (great view of the Navajo res), down the Heart trail, then to the fat mans loop witch leads back to the parking area. This route (either way)makes for a spectacular day hike with not much contact with anyone except for on the mount elden lookout trail.
