Doney Trail Professional Review and Guide
"This very easy, short walk to the top of a volcanic cinder cone features an extensive view of the Painted Desert near Wupatki National Monument.
The soft, rounded slopes, bluffs, and mesa in the distance to the northeast were formed when the soft, pastel-colored shale eroded away. At noon, the harsh, vertical light gives the Painted Desert a washed-out, dull look. In contrast, when the sun is low in the sky in late evening or early morning, the colors come alive."
