This is a hike on the north side of the San Francisco Peaks, in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. It’s a cool hike on a hot summer day, and also great for aspen color during October. The view opens up as you reach the end of the road in Abineau Canyon. The lack of trees in the canyon is due to numerous snow avalanches that roar down the northeast slopes of Humphreys Peak. Some of these slides reach the bottom of the canyon with such power that they continue below the road, crossing back and forth several times before the snow finally loses its momentum. Such a large avalanche will destroy any small trees attempting to grow in its path.
