"This hike climbs up and down Wilson Mountain, the dominant formation north of Sedona. Th e “Route Details” are written as a car shuttle, but the hike can be done from either direction as an outand- back. Th e route follows the North Wilson Mountain Trail 123 up to the First Bench of Wilson Mountain, where it intersects with Wilson Mountain Trail 10. From there it climbs to the top of Wilson Mountain, splitting off to the distant North Overlook or the closer South Overlook. Wilson Mountain Trail 10 continues south down the mountain to Midgely Bridge." Read more

"Wilson Mountain, like other high points in the Sedona area, offers a wonderful vantage point from which to enjoy the surrounding red rock terrain. The Wilson Mountain Trail runs mostly within the Red Rock–Secret Mountain Wilderness and was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 1979. For the ?rst 0.5 mile or so, the trail climbs quickly to gain a ridge just east of Wilson Canyon. This is followed by a stretch of easier grades as the route continues north and approaches the base of the mountain. The terrain along this stretch is dry, open desert. Scattered pinyon pine, juniper, manzanita, agave, yucca, and bear grass are common, but shade is not." Read more

This trail is all uphill to the top of Wilson Mountain. The trail is well-maintained until the junction just below the last climb. From there it is overgrown in many places by fern and a thorned plant, even up on the top. The view on top of the mountain to the south is amazing, well worth the thorns. Try it on a cloudy day to decrease glare on the red rock and bring out its true color.
