Black Hills Back Country Byway: Safford to Clifton Road Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The 21-mile-long Black Hills Back Country Byway, a designated BLM scenic drive, threads through the rugged Black Hills, the northernmost part of the Peloncillo Mountains, in southeastern Arizona.

This long mountain range extends north from the Mexican border to the twisting Gila River north of the Black Hills. The drive follows the Old Safford Road, an unpaved, gravel road that is passable to high-clearance vehicles in dry weather. Passenger cars can also drive on the road under good conditions"

Spring and fall are the best times to experience the Black Hills Back Country Byway. In the spring the hill sides are spotted with yellows and purple and the desert takes on a special hue of orange at sunrize. The road is graded and relatively flat with plenty of turnoffs of historic and scenic value. A great route for bicycles and vehicles. Take plenty of water and snacks. Perfect for drop-offs and pick-ups after a 21 mile ride or hike.
