This two-day backpacking loop circumnavigates the entire Cave Creek trail system. From Spur Cross trailhead near Carefree, the route follows the rugged Cottonwood Creek Trail (an old cattle route that travels east around the south side of Skull Mesa) then heads up Cottonwood Creek and across a divide before heading north to follow Bronco Creek to its confluence with Cave Creek. The second leg follows the perennial Cave Creek west down its canyon, then cuts across a high butte, dropping to rejoin with Cottonwood Trail. Features: Riparian glades, mountain vistas, perennial creeks, three different eco-zones.
