Situated in Apache Pass, Fort Bowie played an integral role in the conquest and settlement of the American West. A visit to this national historic site today will reveal the complete story. To better protect the delicate antiquities of the site, the facility is accessed by a 3-mile round-trip interpretive trail.

This trail is great whether the hiker is more into history or scenery. The day we went the weather was cool but sunny. There is a constant breeze through the area so I am sure it would be a great summer hike. It is ranked as easy but it is by no means flat and boring. My parents, in their 70's, thought it was plenty challenging. The trail is full of history and markers with info. There is a gift shop midway of the loop that has books of the local history and pictures of the area. We took our sweet time and did the trail in 3 hours. I highly suggest a stop at the Fort Bowie Winery after your hike, great wine at a nice price. Wine is made locally.
