A backpack along a primitive trail at the crest of the Galiuro Mountains. This route climbs to the eastern crest of the Galiuros, then runs north on a primitive and poorly maintained trail to reach Sunset Peak. The trail along the crest is extremely brushy for several miles north from the Bassett Peak junction, and route finding is difficult in places. Wear long pants and sleeves to avoid nature’s strongest exfoliant. Rewards include lots of solitude, an abundance of hawks and other raptors, and vast views of one of Arizona’s more remote quarters.
