This is a nice hike over the flanks of Pinyon Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the northeastern Superstition Mountains; it has lots of elevation gain for a relatively short hike and a section of cross-country travel. This hike is a good introduction to this less-traveled portion of the wilderness. You’ll encounter a wide variety of terrain, from Sonoran Desert to pinyon-juniper forest. Start on the Tule Canyon Trail, which wanders southwest from the trailhead, working its way through the foothills toward Tule Canyon. After crossing Tule Canyon, the trail turns more to the west for a while, and climbs onto a ridge south of Tule Canyon.
