A 38-mile, narrow dirt and paved road that twists along steep canyon walls and provides spectacular views of desert, mountains, and lakes. The Apache Trail parallels a stretch of the Salt River and its blue reservoirs and winds through scenic desert country. The first 18 miles at the southwestern end of the two-lane byway are narrow and paved. The remaining 20 miles follow a narrow, washboard dirt road that winds along precipitous cliffs with blind corners and steep drop-offs. The scenery is awesome, but the drive is not for the faint-hearted. Several overlooks provide safe places to enjoy the views. Special attractions: High Sonoran Desert, Four Peaks and Superstition wilderness areas, outstanding views, large freshwater lakes, historic Theodore Roosevelt Dam. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
