A long day hike or backpack in the northern Ajo Mountains. It crosses cactus-rich bajada slopes that offer sweeping views of the valley, then penetrates the northern end of the Ajo Range to take in some of the most striking mountain scenery in the monument.

It was a real adventure NOT to have a trail to follow. Rugged, secluded and warm, this was a fabulous New Year's Eve get-away. Camped on the saddle we enjoyed the quiet crimson sun set on a good year. Just east up the ridge was a formation, looking like an Eagle's head, overhanging a spiritual 'secret spot' that held our contemplative souls in awe.
