The North Fork of the Saline River begins near Crystal Mountain in the Ouachita National Forest and flows to the south to join the Alum Fork of the Saline just below AR 5 near Benton, Arkansas. The upper sections above CR S are full of deadfalls that require paddlers to carry over many of these spots. Paddlers can expect a river that flows through hardwood forests, creating a sanctuary for wildlife. The pools move at a good pace at normal flows, and the river’s proximity to Little Rock makes it a favorite for a Sunday afternoon paddle to stretch the muscles. Water quality is relatively good.
