This is one of my favorite trails in A.R. to venture. No matter what time of year the creek at the end of the trail is always flowing with several swimming holes to cool down in. The trail is well worn, although it is not clearly marked in some areas. The rightly named trail winds along the inside/outside of the mountain, but only presents one moderate ascent at the beginning. It is a pleasurable hike with ample coverage from the blaring sun during summer. Bugs are rampant, however, so do protect yourself. At the end of the trail, there is still more exploring along the creek to be done. I like to do this overnight, but can easily be done in a day. No spectacular views, but an overall great trail!

"This trail follows the Little Missouri River, where swift water collides with sheer bluffs and huge rock formations to produce some of the most spectacular scenery in Arkansas. The Albert Pike Recreation Area, located about 45 miles southwest of Hot Springs, is one of the most popular spots in the Ouachita National Forest. The site is named after Albert Pike, who is remembered primarily as an officer of the Confederacy and a prolific writer. The countryside around Albert Pike Recreation Area is extremely beautiful, with the Little Missouri River, cascading waterfalls, rock outcroppings, scenic views, and swimming holes. And the hiking trails run right through it all." Read more
