Seven Hollows Trail

Seven Hollows Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This rugged trail winds through four hollows and affords a close look at interesting geological formations, such as sandstone bluffs, dramatic overhangs, and rock glades. Seven Hollows is a misnomer, for the trail actually passes through only four hollows.

The hollows themselves are short enough; it’s the trek in between that tests a hiker’s endurance. This trail is recommended for intermediate to advanced hikers and not for small children. With the exception of a few areas where the ground is smooth and level, the trail is a steep up-and-down roller coaster over rough, rocky terrain. A stout walking staff is in order for the less surefooted."

This is the best trail I've ever been on. The scenery is spectacular and the variety of topography, rock formations and vegetation is astounding. It has a giant natural arch. These can be found in the southwest deserts but they're very rare in the middle of a lush forest. The grotto is also fascinating. I probably spent twice as much time stopping to look at all the scenery than I did walking the trail. The guide says this trail is strenuous but I would say it's intermediate. There's not too much elevation change. The Seven Hollows Trail hike is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the beauty of nature.

Strenuous is exactly right! My family and I are novice hikers and thought that we were up to the challenge. It was a long hike, but we completed the loop in 3.5 hours. Mind you, my wife and I are in our early 40's and the girls are 12 and 4 (almost 5). Anyway... lots of beautiful scenery once you get past the charred remains of the forest which covers the first half mile in. If you have problems with bees, wasps, or lizards...this probably isn't the trail for you. Not a flat hike at all, you cross several streams and go into at least 3 hollows...which can be tough when you are packing a 4 year old on your shoulders. The natural bridge is probably the highlight of this hike and is about 1.25 miles in. Take water if you go!
