This trail loops through the wooded edge of a diamond field. As you exit the visitor center and go down a long sidewalk, you get your first memorable look at the “field of dreams. ”This is a literal diamond field, not like Shoeless Joe’s, although he would have felt very comfortable here. Footprints in the ashen-gray earth are of all shapes and sizes, and some are barefoot. Crossing the wide expanse of furrows to the trailhead, you can’t help but cast your eyes downward in hopes of glimpsing something bright and glittery. For a truly unique hiking experience, you must try this place. It’s the only diamond area in North America that is open to the public. A nominal fee gains you admittance to the “field of dreams,” where you can search for diamonds and keep what you find. More than 70,000 diamonds have been found at the “Crater,” an eroded volcanic pipe and the eighth largest diamond reserve in the world.
