The Ouachita River begins west of Mena, Arkansas, near Rich Mountain and flows to the east before it is impounded to form Lake Ouachita. The river itself is not too difficult but offers paddlers a chance to experience the remoteness of the area in the upper stretches and a chance to fish in the sections closer to the lake. The Ouachita appears rather lazy as it flows under the bridge at AR 71. This site is indicative of the overall characteristics paddlers will find on the river. The Ouachita National Forest protects its watershed, and there are virtually no large communities along the Ouachita’s entire length. Consequently, paddlers and anglers are treated to a quiet, peaceful stream away from the frantic city.
