This campground is near the ghost town of Rush, “the town that zinc built.” Discovery of zinc in the 1880s turned this sleepy little farming valley into a noisy boomtown. At one time, 17 mines were operating along Rush and Clabber Creeks. When in 1886 a faulty assay hinted of silver deposits, a smelter was built for processing the ore. No silver was found, but the smelter still stands in the old Morning Star Mining Company’s abandoned mill complex.
