Athens - Big Fork Trail

Athens - Big Fork Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This former mail route features spectacular panoramic views of the Ouachita Mountains. A mystical cave, located 35 feet below the trail on the south side of Brushy Mountain, adds to the hiker’s experience.

Then, going upward, the trail passes some interesting rock formations and outcroppings about 150 feet before reaching the top Brushy Mountain at 1.7 miles. A short spur trail on the left leads to a great panoramic view at Eagle Rock Vista."

I hiked the southern half of this trail as a there-and-back day-hike in mid-March. I climbed as far as the spur trail to a hill top at around 3.5 miles, and then turned back. It took me 5 hours in total, including fairly lenthy stops. I enjoyed this tough hike. The terrain underfoot was fairly challenging - pretty stony/rocky, and the path is consistently narrow. The constant climb-descent-climb pattern makes for a pretty strenuous hike, but the views at Eagle Rock and then at the far-point of my hike were worth it. These aren't "real" mountains obviously - not like you find in the west, but I nevertheless found the view and the breeze at Eagle Rock to be exhilarating - and it was certainly hard work!
great part of Eagle Rock Loop Trail.
