This trail loops through a forested area overlooking Bull Shoals Lake. The trail starts off at a slightly downhill angle through the woods to Chipmunk Creek, an ephemeral stream. The word “ephemeral” is of Greek derivation and means “lasting but a day,” so an ephemeral stream is one that is filled with water only after a rainfall. This stream gets its name from the many eastern chipmunks that inhabit the woods of Lakeside Trail. Though the swift-moving rodents may not show themselves, they can often be heard scurrying through the underbrush on their way back to their burrows with seeds, nuts, and cherry pits crammed in their cheek pouches.
