Big Creek, located in Cleburne County, begins as a tiny stream near the town of Banner on AR 87. Big Creek twists through the Ozark foothills for approximately 38 miles to its confluence with the Little Red River near Pangburn, Arkansas. The best section to paddle is from Low-Water Bridge Three to the Old Iron Bridge just east of AR 110. Do not confuse this Big Creek with the Big Creek in Missouri, described in Part Six: “The St. Francois Mountains.” Big Creek is very scenic and remote due to limited access points. The area abounds with plants and wildlife, and the run is rife with deep green pools separated by fast rocky chutes that require the paddler to use backferrying skills to negotiate the course successfully. Hardwood forests and rock bluffs line the creek and protect the deer, squirrels, and wild turkey that paddlers often sight.
