The first thing you’ll notice when you travel northwest Alabama—from Florence to Muscle Shoals to Decatur—is that everything seems to be named Wheeler: Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, Wheeler Dam, and Wheeler Highway. All bear the name of Joe Wheeler, a Georgia native who has the unique distinction of serving as an officer for both the Confederate Army during the Civil War and the US Army in the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars. His efforts on the battlefield earned him the nickname “Fighting” Joe Wheeler. Between his tours of duty with the military, Wheeler was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1880, where he remained until 1900.
