Palisades Park & the Bridges of Blount County Professional Review and Guide
"This trip includes a hike at Palisades Park and a driving circuit of three covered bridges located relatively close together in Blount County. These bridges are not only historic but also feats of nature and works of art. Horton Mill Bridge and Swann Bridge also offer a chance to see beautiful stretches of the Black Warrior River’s Locust Fork.Depending on how you want to shape your day, you have several options on this jaunt. You can head up AL 75 from Birmingham, pass through Oneonta, and see the Horton Mill Covered Bridge before driving across it on your way to Palisades Park. Leaving Palisades Park, you can hit the Easley and Swann Covered Bridges before returning to Birmingham on AL 79. Or you can take the loop in reverse.Horton Mill Bridge is just off AL 75, north of Oneonta. Look for a small gravel parking lot on the left side of the road (if you’re going north). Park in the lot and take in the bridge. Built in 1934, Horton Mill is the tallest historic covered bridge in the United States, crossing 75 feet in the air above the Calvert Prong of the Locust Fork River. It’s 220 feet long and has a load limit of 3 tons (if you plan to drive across)."
