When I first visited Lake Guntersville State Park, it was for a little book about hiking that I wrote a decade ago. What a beautiful place. The blue-green waters of its namesake 6,000-acre reservoir shimmered alongside the campgrounds, and it quickly became a favorite. But Mother Nature is always at work, and in the spring of 2011 a massive EF3 tornado barreled through north Alabama, leaving a path of death and destruction in its wake. Lake Guntersville State Park stood in the path of the storm.
