Byron Glacier View Professional Review and Guide
"This wide gravel trail is a delightful walk for families with small children, for Aunt Minnie, and for spry great-grandfather. An easy hike with no climbing, the trip is exciting for those who have never seen rugged mountain and glacier terrain up close. Bring a picnic lunch and relax in the heart of snow-and-ice country."
--Helen D. Nienhueser & John Wolfe Jr., 55 Ways to the Wilderness in Southcentral Alaska (The Mountaineers Books).
Quite an easy trail with an outstanding view of Byron Glacier. Intrepid risk-takers can, of course, go OFF the trail and get a closer look. Be prepared for plenty of the unofficial Alaska State Bird (mosquito) to appear, and there are numerous bear sightings/warnings posted, so bring your cowbell. Cloud-free days are rare in Portage Valley. But don't despair, as the glacier-blue color is best seen on cloudy days.
