A new, primitive trail, built by Alaska State Parks, offers hikers a spectacular walk above Port Valdez into beautiful Shoup Bay with stunning views of Shoup Glacier and the iceberg-strewn lagoon at its toe. Two public-use cabins and good campsites await hikers on the shores of Shoup Bay Lagoon at trail’s end. The first part of the trail, to Gold Creek, is easy and offers the option of a day hike out of Valdez. The trail becomes increasingly rugged beyond Gold Creek. Hikers choosing the full trip should be experienced and in good condition.
