Paved highway from Valdez to Fairbanks; 364 miles (586 kilometers). The Richardson Highway is the oldest road in Alaska. It winds through the spectacular Chugach Mountains, crosses the Copper River basin, and then bisects the Alaska Range before following the Tanana River into Fairbanks. The southern part of the route was pioneered in 1902 as part of the Eagle-Valdez Trail, which followed the route of a military telegraph line. Captain William Abercrombie, who began exploring the Copper River basin in 1884, laid out the southern portions of this route. It became a major pack trail, and gold seekers blazed a spur to the Fairbanks gold fields after traveling inland from Valdez in 1902. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
