A maintained trail close to town with access to tundra and alpine with spectacular views of Chugach Mountains, Campbell Creek, and the Cook Inlet. Wolverine Peak, the prominent triangular peak at the intersection of two alpine ridges above south Anchorage, is a well-known local landmark. The peak offers a fine overlook of the upper valleys of North and Middle Fork Campbell Creek and a view of some of Chugach State Park’s rugged inner peaks. The peak got its name from wolverine tracks once found on the summit ridge.

The trail was a gradual slope for the first few miles and then a pretty descent climb to the peak for the last few. There was a plane wreck close to the peak. The scenery was well worth the hike. Took us 4 hrs 22 min including 40 mins on the peak.

I LOVE this hike to Wolverine Peak. Have done it twice (first time June 12, 2005) and the second time just reconfirmed that this is my favorite hike in the Anchorage Bowl even though my second time it was fogged in at the top and about 39F. Trail guides say this is a moderate trail, but I consider it an easy to moderate trail. Trail is very easy to follow and pretty wide most of the way. The elevation is the only thing that might be moderate, but the grade is not too bad. I find it very reasonable when considered against other hikes like Bird Ridge or even Flat Top. First time took me and my husband 2 hours to summit and second time took 2.5 hours with slower friends to summit. Great views of downtown Anchorage and the Alaska range. Have seen moose and sheep on this hike. I highly recommend it!

Great long day hike out of Anchorage. The first half is moderate, through dense vegetation. Then you are cast out on to the steep, exposed part of the trail. Amazing views of Anchorage, Turnagain Arm, Sleeping Lady. We were hiking above grazing mountain goats!
