Ship Lake Pass is a wonderful day hike for various hiking abilities, with easy access to alpine country, and plenty of options to extend to overnight traverse options. Three-quarters of Chugach State Park is above tree line, and this hike from Glen Alps is a fine way to sample the park’s alpine country. The trip is good all summer, but fall is probably its finest season, when the gnarled mountain hemlocks are green, the blueberry and bearberry have turned fiery red, and the willows, birches, and mountain ash have gone gold.
