Flattop is climbed more often than any mountain in Alaska, and that is a mixed blessing. It boasts a high trailhead with plenty of space for parking, a short and well-maintained trail, and gorgeous summit vistas from Cook Inlet to Denali. And yet Flattop is somehow… un-Alaskan! Alaska is famous for its beautiful wilderness, not for its crowds. Flattop has an abundance of both, bringing to mind Yogi Berra’s oft-quoted lament about a favorite restaurant: “Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.” Still, Flattop is an undeniably beautiful hike and the flagship of Chugach State Park’s “accessible wilderness.” It’s almost a tradition: sometime during the summer, enjoy a sunny evening with your friends and family atop Flattop Mountain. Just don’t expect to be the only ones.

I would recommend it as something to do if you're looking for a 'simpler' hike in Anchorage. We did it with our three year old-but there was still snow at the summit and it was difficult at that part. But it was crowded with people, and the parking lot does have many break-ins. But worth it for a day trip for sure. Saw someone try to do it with a stroller-they didnt make it far.

Lots of ppl on the trail, but since we did it our first day in town, it was a nice warm-up. Lots of stairs for you, and the steep rocky ending is a brief challenge to reach the summit. Our 5-year old ascended w/ us all by herself---even the huge boulders at the end. Fun for the family!

The trail was pretty easy for the most part. Great views at the top. It gets steep near the top and poles make a difference here. I saw some people bringing little kits and wearing flip flops on the trail and I would not recommend doing that. Also do not store any valuables in your car, there has been a rash of break-ins at trailheads in the Anchorage area all summer.

Flattop is a moderate hike with AWESOME views of Anchorage and Campbell Creek. It's perfect for the kids and somewhat less experinced hikers. It's just a little out of town but the views pay off! It has a marker and carin at the top to let you know you are 3,550 feet up in the air!
