Thanks to easy access, Flattop is probably the most frequently climbed peak in Alaska, and the trip to its broad summit has long been the classic afternoon hike near Anchorage. The view from the top extends from Denali (Mount McKinley) in the northwest to Mount Redoubt volcano in the southwest. Although parts of the climb are steep, most of the ascent is not difficult. Novices may have problems, however. Do not take small children unless they are cautious, experienced hikers. Boots with good traction and ankle support are recommended for safety.
