This chain of islands has great public access—and camping—and a (distant) view of Manhattan’s skyscrapers. Less than 40 miles from Manhattan, the Norwalk Islands are a group of at least 23 islands, ranging from tiny, rocky islets to a 59-acre island with thick forests and diverse bird populations. Generally less than a mile from the mainland, the islands are easily reachable by kayak and half are open to the public. The cities of Norwalk and Westport manage campsites at three of the islands, which all require advance reservations. Several other islands have good landings for day use. You can also just find yourself a stretch of beach and relax. The beaches in the area are terminal moraines shaped by glaciers and tend to be more gravel than sand, but they’re great places to pull up for a lunch break or to watch for birds.
