This hike makes a loop above Coal Bank Pass via Pass Creek Trail (Trail 500) to the foot of impressive Engineer Mountain, then north on the Engineer Mountain Trail (Trail 508) to return on Coal Creek Trail (Trail 677). The wildflowers are spectacular on many sections of this hike during July and early August. Several places offer great views of the West Needle Mountains in the Weminuche Wilderness to the east and north to the mountains between Silverton and Telluride. The final 1.3 miles of the hike are along US 550 and can be avoided with a car shuttle.
