This hike first follows the Levsa Canyon Nature Trail and then about 2.6 miles of the Reilly Canyon Trail. Winding through piƱon pine and juniper forest gives you an idea of the land through which early settlers traveled, especially on the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail (where I-25 now exists). The suggested turnaround point is a bench where the trail approaches Trinidad Lake and has a good view of the dam. Look for deer in some of the meadows. While hiking you can catch views of Fishers Peak, as well as the old coal mines and town sites on or below the south shore.
