Two for the price of one: This hike combines a leisurely stroll straight out into the Hudson River with a close examination of a challenged marsh. While the Hudson River hosts salt marshes farther downstream, freshwater from the river’s northern reaches in the Adirondacks and from natural watersheds along its length eventually meet the salt water pushed upstream by the ocean’s tides. This creates a transitional marsh, home to a variety of plants that can only grow in a brackish environment. Unfortunately, such marshes may be dominated by nonnative species like Japanese knotweed and phragmites—the tall plants with the tassel at the top—which eventually crowd out native species.
