Without a doubt, you will see some of the most impressive High Sierra scenery around on this stretch of the 200-plus-mile John Muir Trail (JMT). Access from the east side is via the very popular 8.4-mile Mt. Whitney Trail from Whitney Portal, with wilderness permits at a premium (see Trip 95, page 327). Those fortunate enough to score a permit have the opportunity to scale Mt. Whitney along the way and continue their journey along the JMT, exiting at Onion Valley via the Kearsarge Pass Trail.
