Rainbow Falls is a surprise. The falls here don’t begin and end all at once like those you’re probably used to. Nine small waterfalls follow one after the other in a cascade of falling water. The falls look pink, as the water drops over the reddest of granites. Masses of lichen turn the same pink bedrock gray beneath your feet, as though nature knows how to present the best elements together. Then, the cascading falls end abruptly in a local swimming hole full of rainbow trout. Known as the “deep pool,” this pond is almost twice as deep–about 9m (30ft)as it is wide. A steep rocky slope and wild currents in the spring and at the beginning of summer can make swimming here treacherous. This trail guide includes Falls Boardwalk, The Superior Trail, Rainbow Falls Trail, and The Back 40 Trail.
