The 24,000-acre Pachaug State Forest—Connecticut’s largest state forest—has much to offer in the way of recreational opportunities. The hike described here is especially great for young children, as they can traipse over the boardwalks of a swamp among giant rhododendrons and hike to the summit of Mount Misery, all in the same short trip. The Rhododendron Sanctuary is especially spectacular when the rhododendrons bloom, usually in early July. The Mount Misery campground is located close to the trailhead and offers sites on a first-come, first-served basis for those that want to stay the night.
