You can’t judge a trail by the trailhead. In this case, the innocent-looking path that leads from the parking area quickly becomes a trail that commands hikers to scale steep and rugged granite walls, crawl through stone passageways, and inch across sloping rock faces. The trails wander through the 1200-acre preserve for 40 miles, marked with an intricate blazing system in which shapes as well as colors differentiate the trails. Paths crisscross one another and a trail may come within yards of intersecting a previously traversed section. It’s easy to get confused. Preteens who are experienced hikers will handily meet the challenges of Westwoods and brag to school chums about their day spent imitating Indiana Jones. But younger kids and even adults without much experience should opt for something a little easier.
